Born & raised in Virginia, I moved to the Seattle area in 2002.

I've been in software development for over 16 years because it feeds my need to solve problems and find ways to make things just work better.

When people ask why I moved to the Pacific Northwest the answer is simple - quality of life and the weather. Fresh air, beautiful forests, perfect summers, the lakes, the cosmopolitan nature of the area, and the chance to connect with some of the brightest minds in software development. Besides, where else in the US is a conservative, Southern good ol' boy like me going to find a city with a statue of V. I. Lenin at a public intersection? :-o

Going, going, gone digital -- with a few exceptions - CNN.com

According to this article on the CNN website, the FCC received well over 300,000 phone calls on it’s 1-800-CALL-FCC help line on Friday from people who apparently had concerns about the end of analog television signals.  So somehow 300,000 people couldn’t figure out the need to get a converter box and simply plug it in – despite all the news stories, PSA’s and advertising – but they had no trouble figuring out how to call a relatively obscure toll-free line to a relatively obscure federal agency that rarely interacts with the general public.

Sure.  Makes sense to me.  Not.

Subway's Fit to Boom site is now live

The new Subway site I worked on with the MSN Branded Entertainment & Experience Team (BEET) launched yesterday morning. It targets Baby Boomers who are making a difference in their lives with 2nd careers. The videos stories are terrific and the Subway restaurant locator map is better than what Subway has on their corporate site! Check out Fit To Boom and enter the contest if you are a "Boomer".  Wink

And congratulations to the teams in both Seattle and Shanghai who made it happen.  Great Work!

Great Management? Statistically Improbable.

Amazon.com does a fairly decent job of making product recommendations based on my browsing history.  Today I received a recommendation for the book Harvard Business Review on Leadership, a collection of “classic” HBR articles on the topic. Amazon also offers a feature on most book pages called “Statistically Improbable Phrases” – or, simply SIPs.  Here are some of the SIPs found in this book:

Zachary Levi does his part for the Subway Save "Chuck" Campaign

I love the TV show "Chuck".  So does just about anyone who has ever seen it!  Unfortunately it has suffered from its first season hit success by being caught its second season in the most competitive hour of prime time television in the US - Monday night at 8:00 PM (ET/PT).  Every show in that hour is down from last year's ratings because of the stiff competition - House, Big Bang Theory/How I Met Your Mother, Dancing with the Stars, and Gossip Girl.  The nature of Chuck's audience demographic and the unavailability of Big Bang Theory on pay outlets meant it got chosen more often for being the show that got DVR'd, bought on Amazon, or watched on Hulu.  NBC - with its usual programming wisdom - is considering cancelling "Chuck".  "Chuck" fans are showing their support for this wonderfully entertaining show by supporting one of the main sponsors, Subway Sandwiches.  Please do your part by visiting a Subway shop today and leave a comment card to "Save Chuck".

Also, be sure to check out the newest custom Subway site - "Fit to Boom" - when it debuts June 2 at 9:00 AM ET.  Geared toward 'Boomers' like me, the site will include a contest with a $20,000 cash prize!
